First, make sure you get an updated written appraisal from a reputable jewelry store (Local stores in your city with a trustworthy reputation that have been in business for a long time are best). Make sure the jeweler is a certified gemologist. Next, see if the store sells jewelry on consignment. (If the store keeps a percentage, it is worth it. The store has insurance against theft, fire, etc. and their repeat customers or their friends just might be looking for a 3 karat ring). If the store won’t sell it, ask for a recommendation as to where you can sell it. Call around to local jewelry stores. I wouldn’t sell a 3 karat ring on ebay. Too many risks. Do not take it to a pawn shop!!! Above all, DO NOT advertise in the newspaper. Thugs scour jewelry want ads so they can set up robberies.

Go through an estate Jewelry sales person. Search it on the internet and it shouldn’t be hard to find…. I know of one in Dallas… try there… they allow for bank references… ect so you can gain their trust.

Estate buyers buy old jewelry, unique, and large diamonds (over one karat is a large diamond)

DON”T go to a pawn shop. lets say us at the jewelry store pay $10 per point…. a pawn will give you say less than $1.00. They are trying to make their living and make a buck off of you. I wouldn’t advice ebay either.

Get it apprasied for value based on clarity cut ect. and go to a real jeweler and either they MAY but or can have a good resource that they trust.

Since you’re dealing w/ a hefty, I’d get it professionally appraised at a jeweler first. Find a reputable appraiser/gemologist. Here are some links FYI:

I’d consider e-bay but make sure you protect yourself from fraud. Consider researching it by reading something like “E-Bay for Dummies.”

The other thing I’d do is see if any friends or family members are willing to buy it at or slightly below the appraised value.
