She can sue them, but the store's insurance company would probably settle with her.

Yes, they are liable and responsible for replacing the ring....which is irreplaceable b/c it's her grandmother's ring. That stinks.

hopefully she has had it appraised at some point.

Good luck

firstly I assume they gave you a reciept to undertake the work and so you have a number when you come to pick it up?

yes- you can sue the pants off them because the ring was in their care

no- slightly more difficult path, ask them to replace it with a ring to the same value, if they refuse go to the police, file that you had your ring stolen, ask them to access survellence footage from the store to prove that you gave them the ring, from there you should be able to take them to court as now your have video evidence which shows you giving the ring into their care. then sure the @ss off them.

in most cases if you speak to the manager of the store you will be able to come to a compromise and find a way to reach an amicable outcome.

She is entitled to compensation based on the value of the ring. If she has a photo, a jeweler might be able to make a duplicate.
She should also notify the police. They know how to get owners of pawn shops to talk, if someone stole the ring and pawned it.

Call the police. No one just "loses" a diamond like that. This is a crime which warrants investigation.
